BIO

Claire Schneider is an American photojournalist born and raised in San Francisco by a school teacher and a librarian. She recognized an early ability to bring diverse ethnic groups together and gain the trust of people from backgrounds other than her own. She began to parlay this ability into photographic work with her first long-term documentary project on the U.S.-Mexico border, awarded a National Press Photographer's Foundation scholarship in 1999. After graduating from the University of California, San Diego in 1998, Claire began a career as a freelance photojournalist for The Oakland Tribune and The Associated Press.

Claire is currently filming a multimedia project in the Indian state Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) where she resides part of the year. When not traveling in Kashmir, she prefers to photograph a different sort of conflict at home in the U.S. - politics. Her book, American (Except)ionalism, was self-published in December 2010, and is available for purchase through Blurb.com.

Claire is an instructor at The International Center of Photography in New York City and currently works as a stringer for The Associated Press in New York City. In 2012, she was the Grand Prize recipient of PDN's World In Focus Contest.
